In order to meet the growing costs associated with the review of research involving human subjects, the University of Arizona will no longer be able to waive indirect costs on IRB review fees.  Beginning April 1, 2009, all IRB fees on new industry sponsored projects involving human subjects shall be charged full F&A costs.

This fee structure only applies to the IRB review of any new industry sponsored project. Fees are now charged for both the initial and continuing review. There is no charge for amendments or adverse event reports. NOTE: Projects for which initial review was conducted prior to April 1, 2009 will not be charged the indirect costs.

Fees are:

Initial, Full Board - $2,500

Initial, Full Board VA - $2,700 (includes an 8% administrative charge)

Initial, Expedited - $1,000

Initial, Expedited VA - $1,080

Renewal, Full board or Expedited - $1,000

Renewal, Full Board or Expedited VA - $1,080

Initial, WIRB - $1,000

• The proposed change in fee structure is in line with other institutions as well as for-profit organizations. 
• Full F&A costs will be calculated on the IRB review fee.
• The fee is not based on whether the project is actually initiated, but rather on the fact that the project received Full Board or expedited review.
• Investigators and/or departments are responsible for the payment of this fee if the sponsor does not ultimately reimburse this fee.
